For the beauty of the earth　．．．．．ジョン・ラター

ジョン・ラターは現代イギリスを代表する作曲家の一人である。
テレビ・映画等メディアへの曲の提供も数多いが、特に宗教音楽への造詣が深い。
GLORIA(1974),REQUIEM(1985)等、名作も生まれている。
作品が成立してから数年でこれだけの演奏機会を得、更に録音も多いのは、このジャンルでは特筆すべきところだろう。

この「For the beauty of the earth」は、1984年にGLORIAのＣＤを発売した際に、作曲者自信の選により同時に収録された、彼の讃美歌の中のひとつである。
それぞれが短い中に様々な手法が織り込まれ、古来の賛美歌とは違うポピュラリズムにあふれている。
が、賛美歌本来の、敬虔な輝きは失われていない。
この曲は彼の賛美歌の中でも、歌詞もわかりやすく身近で、メロディも美しく、代表作のひとつだと思う。

少人数で歌われても、効果が高く、音楽の性格上管楽器との相性もいいために、吹奏楽の演奏会でもよく取り上げる。
合唱とピアノ、吹奏楽、オーケストラと多岐にわたる形態で、僕の指揮による演奏は実に２０回以上に及ぶ。
