[ To Silk Road ] ![]() In May 2000, I entered Hami in China and in 2001, I was bicycling through Central Asia, which used to be the territory of the former Soviet Union. I landed on the Eurasian Continent 5 years ago, but I still have not finished crossing the former Soviet Union. This must have been the most extensive country that has ever existed. Through bicycling, I was able to experience the distinctive features of the land. The land along the Silk Road was flat. 3000 kilometers from Hami could be covered easily with the help of camels or horses. But this also meant that the region could easily become a target of invasion from other countries. I finally understood why Central Asia became the crossroads of East(China) and West(Europe). On the contrary, the American continents with their undulating geography, had no trading nor invasion between Incas and Aztecs. |
