[ Crossing the Gobi Desert ]

April 2000. Crossing the Gobi Desert in southern Mongolia and through the Altai Mountains, I headed for the boarder with China. I traveled on a camel, following the model of nomads who have been traveling long distances in caravans for centuries. A camel can walk 50 kilometers a day, carrying a load of 200 kilograms. Spring is sandstorm season. It's also a time for livestock to give birth, so the nomads are busy. Nomads from 6 areas, however, agreed to take the trouble to guide me throughout the route in relays. Beyond the horizon a mirage would occasionally loom up. Rhythmical wind patterned the dunes.
