[ The Naked Tribe: A Love/Hate Relationship ] With the entwining flows of both the source the Orinoco and the tributaries of the Amazon, the boarder
area between Brazil and Venezuela is an ideal place to be left untrodden. This is where Yanomami
Tribe lives. It is the people who have long refused the contact with civilization and stubbornly stuck to
their own culture. In a jungle a third the size of Japan, they live with nature, repeating breaking, up
and re-organizing into groups and making new shabonos (a large house in a circle). The tribe of
Yanomami is the people whom I was most impressed with amongst the various indigenous tribes in
South America. They are cheerful and uninhibited, and never hide their emotions. When you live
with them, you get exhausted to the point that you feel like getting away from them. I once thought I
would never see them again. Life in the village of Yanomami is harassed with bites by numerous bugs
and cockroaches, and fear against parasites including malaria, jaguars, and snakes. In addition to this,
the humidity and the heat are so intense that both your mind and body start to decompose. I started
hating them all. Yet, the Yanomami tribe have some magnetic attraction. The moment I left them,
I started to miss them. Mysterious people. |
