1995年のあの日、土曜出勤のオフィスで、ぼおと新聞を見ていたが、ふとなぜか気になって死亡記事に目がいった。そこには目を疑う記事があった。ゼラズニイの訃報があった。まだ50代後半だ。60を過ぎても旺盛な執筆で大作を発表している作家が多いこのSF界で、まだ充分に書いていける年齢だった。1960年代の華麗さはなくなったとはいえ、円熟の境地は新しい作品を生み出す素となるはずだった。しかし、その作品はもう既にない…

表記について、ゼラズニー、ゼラズニィ、ヅラゼニー等、あやしいものも含めて、いろいろあるが、ゼラズニイに統一。

金星での魚釣り?、火星人とのラヴ・ロマンス?、なぜ、そんな話が傑作になるの?

最初に読んだ時、わたしは感じました。たいしたことない話しではないか、でもなんでこんなにいいのだろうと。なにかがある。SFらしいというよりも、違う部分に訴えかけているのだけど、SFを感じさせてくれる作家。それが一世を風靡した、ロジャー・ゼラズニイです。いまでも大好きな作家です。作品そのものは、けっこう出来、不出来の幅が大きいように思います。ピタッとはまると凄いなあと素直にいえます。そういう作品があるから、水準に達している作品が、それにしてもと感じてしまうのかも知れません。窓の外を見つめる想いを、ふと忘れ去っているときに読むと「伝道の書にバラを」は、その想いをなつかしく思い出させてくれます。

この中での名作といったら「復讐の女神」と「フロストとベータ」でしょう。サンドール・サンドールは全宇宙の地理と場所を覚えている男。ペネディック・ペネディクトはＥＳP、読心力を持つ男。リンクス・リンクスはおそるべき殺し屋。彼ら3人の男たちが宇宙の極悪人、心臓のない男ヴィクター・コーゴを追いはじめた。「復讐の女神」はおもしろい。わたしの大好きなひとつです。「フロストとベータ」はロボットテーマのひとつ。人間というものを理解しようというコンピュータの物語。泣かせのはなしなのです。アンバーシリーズとか、ゼラズニイはほとんど絶版のようだけど、再刊してくれないのかなあ。もったいないと思うけど。
