懐かしき『トリフィド時代』。ある日の彗星を見た人々が、盲目となり、そして、飼われていたトリフィドが、人々を襲う。
能天気と言っちゃまずいだろうけど、ひょこひょこ動くトリフィッドを避けて、人類の再繁栄を誓う。実に牧歌的。
破滅テーマの名作である。ほとんど設定のみで読ませていたが、今となっちゃ古臭い。だけど、個人的に破滅テーマを片っ端から読んでいたせいか、（たぶん世界は破滅しても自分は生き残るという妄想の持ち主であるからして）好きなんですね。
『海竜めざめる』でも泡が攻撃兵器になるという、ほとんど冗談だが、丁寧な物語の作り方で実に地味。
ミュータント・テーマの『さなぎ』や、侵略テーマの『呪われた村』、夫婦もんの話に昇華してしまう『地衣騒動』。いまどきないよ。
