ニューヨーク市生まれ、テキサス州ヒューストンで育った。家系はオランダとスイス系で、テキサス農工大で途中で朝鮮戦争に従軍し戦闘歩兵徽章を受け、終戦後、ヒューストン大学で学び、機械工学科を卒業。「プラント・エンジニアリング」誌の編集長を11年勤め1984年にフルタイムの作家に転身。このとき、すでに53才。新しい太陽の書自体が40代後半に書かれているし、1970年以降の作品がすごいが、それは40に手が届く年齢だし、年齢と作品の相関関係は日米では大きく違うのだろうか。
読む努力に充分、報いてくれる尊敬する作家。でも翻訳家の苦労も並み大抵ではないはず。
