シカゴ出身。ノースウェスタン大学卒業。ブロードウェイや映画の脚本で名を成し、1949年にアカデミー脚本賞を受賞。
某出版社の超訳で有名になったように思えるが、もともと力のある作家であり、ぐちゃぐちゃな訳でだめにされるのはなんともはや、くちおしや。
