『悪鬼の種族』が出たころ、ほとんど知名度はゼロだった。なにせ短編だけの紹介であったから、あまり期待せずに、わたしも読んだ。けど、これがけっこうおもしろい。
隠れた名作としてずいぶん話にはだしたのだけど、あまり聞いてくれなかった記憶がある。青心社のSFシリーズが出たとき、予定にシュミッツの名を見たとき、狂喜した。そのあと、新潮文庫(Shincho bunko)から傑作『惑星カレスの魔女』。カバーはなんと宮崎駿。ようやく実力通りの人気となった。カバーだけで終らなかったと思いたい。寡作であり、代表作は、ほとんど訳されてしまった。さびしいと言えばさびしいけども。
