ニュージャージー州生まれ。ミズーリ大学卒業。表記はリチャード・マティスン、リチャード・マジスン、リチャード・マチスン等々。
リチャード・マシスンで統一。大好きな作家。なんでもどれでもいい。

遠い昔、なにげなく読みはじめた一編が忘れられないインパクトを与えてくれた。それが「激突」と「二年めの蜜月」である。『地獄の家』でのけぞり、以降、凡作、傑作、気にせずむさぼるように読んだ。
ホラー、ＳＦと多彩で短編のおもしろさを存分に味合せてくれる作家である。
『ある日どこかで』は映画も見て、ビデオも持っているが、原作を読んでから再度見ることはしなかった。しかし、この作品が『地獄の家』の後に出たとは、とても思えないほどである。どちらかというと商売上は『地獄の家』の延長線上の作品になるはずなのであるが。
ひとことで言うと、若干かたっるい。たよとうムードを楽しめるひとにはすばらしい小説だろうなと思うのだが、少々、ねじの曲がったわたしには食いつきが足りなかった。
たぶん翻訳されなかった経緯のひとつには、この「たるさ（あるいは雰囲気）」が一因としてあるのでないかと思う。
全訳はもちろん正しい選択である。そして、後世に残るマシスンの代表作かどうかは、読者次第であろう。卑怯にもわたしは逃亡する。
短篇の好みは、「男と女から生まれたもの」(柿沼さんの訳は好みです)、「魔女戦線」、「白絹のドレス」、「二年目の蜜月」、「テスト」、「消えた少女」
