イギリス、バークシャー州のメイドンヘッド生まれ。
第一次世界大戦には、イギリス軍として出征し負傷する。その悲惨な経験から、ドリトル・シリーズを書くきっかけになったらしい。
有名な子ども向けの話の中には、こうした悲惨な体験が裏打ちされている場合も多い。
ドリトル先生、ジョン・ドゥーリトル(John Dolittle)ものは、執筆後、アメリカ人として発表。
