イリノイ州シカゴ出身。父親のフリッツ・ライバー・シニアは映画俳優。息子のジャスティン・ライバー(Justin Leiber)は、哲学者。

SFを読んでいて、よかったなあと感じる時がある。そう、ばっちし自分の嗜好と合う作家と巡りあった時だ。ライバーと巡りあった時もそれを感じた。『年刊SF傑作選7』に収録されていた「冬の蠅」。描写の妙、たぶん私自身に純文学の素養がないために、はまったのであろうと思う。深淵さを垣間見させる小説技術に惚れ込み、探しだした「ラン・チチ・チチ・タン」や、「骨のダイスを転がそう」にいかれてしまった。
心の闇に迫る超絶技巧を感じさせる作家。まさにそれが、フリッツ・ライバーである。
が、しかし、この作家の短編集は、たった二冊。うち一冊は、なんだかなあと思えるような翻訳で、もう一冊は古えの一冊になってしまっている。
そう、今こそ声を大きく言いたい。ライバーを復権しないのは信じられないことであると。
ファファード＆グレイ・マウザーが脚光を浴びる部分もあるが、この作家の本質は、それ以外の短篇にこそあるのだ。
猫のガミッチものもいいけども、「正気と狂気」、「ミュータント兄弟」、時間逆行テーマものの「若くならない男」他にも同テーマの作品はあるけども、「セールスマンの厄日」、「マリアーナ」、「237個の肖像」、「骨のダイスを転がそう」、ファンタジーなのか、それともというすさまじい「影の船」、オルタネート・ワールドものの傑作「あの飛行船をつかまえろ」、問題作「ベルゼン急行」、それがほとんど雑誌に埋もれている。なんということだ。
作者渾身の改変戦争シリーズ、スネークとスパイダーをめぐる永遠のテーマを、わけのわかりにくい翻訳で出た長編ですべてが破壊されてしまった。
どこの出版社でもいい。なんとかいま再評価の機会を。それを祈っている。
そんな中で出た『妻という名の魔女たち』はうれしかった。『闇の聖母』は、そう少し直截的で、けっこうおもしろいんだけど、復刊はされないだろうけどね、『放浪惑星』ぐらいしか手にいれやすいのは、哀しい。
ファファード&グレイマウザー・シリーズの復刊はうれしい。できれば５冊で終わらないとうれしいのだけど。そうファンは贅沢なんですよね。
