アイオワ州生まれ。アイルランド系の敬虔なカトリック教徒、電気技師として生活し、45才のとき、作家になる。オクラホマ州ブロークン・アローの養老院で死去。
表記は、ラファテイ、ラファティー、ラファティとあり、ラファティで統一。
奇妙な味というか、奇妙奇天烈な作風。愛好家は多い。わたしも好きだ。が、しかし、たまになんなのよおというのがある。そこもよかったりするのだけども、ね。
