ミスターSF。そのインパクトは実にすばらしかった。わたしが最初に読んだのは『月を売った男』である。ショックを受けたのは『月は無慈悲な夜の女王』であった。『メトセラの子ら』『宇宙の戦士』これはまったく理解の枠外なのかも知れないけど『異星の客』（完全版はどこへいった）。え、なに、『夏への扉』だって。そんな軟弱なもんは、許さないぜ。

短編にこそ真価があるのかもしれない。長編に隠れてしまうのかもしれないけど、本当のSFの短編のおもしろさを教えてくれたのは、ハインラインだったと思う。ストレートなアイデアものが多く、わかりやすくていい。
中期から、ハイラネスクとも表現された長編は、エンターテイメントから逸脱するぎりぎりの線、それは危うい味付け。晩年、それを突破してしまっているのだけども、燦然と輝く巨星は、いつでも読めるようにしていてほしいものだ。
ミズーリ州生まれ。アナポリスのアメリカ海軍兵学校に1925年に入学し、海軍士官になるが病気のために1934年退役。UCLAの大学院で数学を学ぶが、再び病気で退学。以後職を点々とする。 1939年に「生命線」でデビュー。 1943年、海軍に復帰。技術士官(航空工学)。1946年に退役。以後、数々の著作で名を馳せる。死因は肺気腫。
