ハーラン・エリスン Harlan Jay Ellison 1934- U.S.A.
Collection

オハイオ州に生まれ育ち、オハイオ州立大学で学ぶが、18ヶ月後、退学処分。創作講座での態度が悪いといったことらしい。1955年にニューヨークに出て、書きまくるけど売れなかった。1956年はじめに売れはじめ、1958年末には150編を越えたらしい。この時代の短編は「闇よりも暗く」と「ロボット外科医」「最後の剥製」なのだが、まあ、たいしたことないわなあ。
この頃にニューヨークのブルックリン、レッド・フック地区のバロン団に仲間入り、十週間の経験を小説にした処女長編を書きあげる。
1957年に陸軍に徴兵、1959年に除隊、シカゴに住み、1962年にロサンジェルスに転居。この後、ＴＶ関係の仕事をこなし、1965年以降は質の高い作品群を産み出すのは、以下の傑作の通り。しかし、日本で不遇であるのは変わらない。現在70才。
Pen Name:エリス・ハート(Ellis Hart)、ヘンリー・スレッサーと使用したレイ・ハーソン(Sley Harson)等。

『世界の中心で愛を叫んだけもの』 The Beast that Shouted Love at the Heat of the World (1971)

ご存知ハーラン・エリスンの有名な短編集です。シリーズ版を探しまくったが結局見つからず、文庫版がでるまで、じっと我慢していました。当時、いわゆるひとつの衝撃は受けました。
最先端といわれていればいるほど、色あせるのが早いと感じるのだけどエリスンの場合、あまりそれを感じさせない力をもっているように思う。衝撃とか、驚異とかだけでめまいを起こさせるのでなくて、もっと根底でひとを揺るがすためではないだろうかと思う。「少年と犬」とのラストシーンがなぜ心に残り、感動させ得るものを持っているのはどうしてなのか、不思議である。この短編集の中で、一番すきなのは「101号線の決闘」ですね。車にのっていると、良く思います。殺伐とした意識になってしまいます。エリスンのは暴力的だとよく書かれていたと思うけど、ただ単に本人が短気なだけじゃないのかなあ。短気だから、短編が多い。そんなことはないか。

危険なテーマで書かれた作品を集めるという有名なアンソロジー。日本では、三分冊で出版予定でしたが、結局一冊めで終わりそう。いまさら出せないよなというとこなんでしょうね。本国でも、この続編の『危険なヴィジョン、ふたたび』は出たけど、三つめはついに幻に消えていきそうである。残った収録作品は以下の通り。
