女優パトリシア・ニールの夫。ほとんどアメリカで過ごしていたらしい。
ミステリでは、独特のタッチの短編で有名だけど、世界的には少年少女向け、子供向けの本で有名である。
子供向けの物語は相当にむずかしいと思っている。一定評価を得られつづける作品を持つのは、素晴らしい。
だからこそ、その短編も並みではないのかもしれない。
映画『チキ・チキ・バン・バン』『007は二度死ぬ』の脚本も担当。
