イギリス・サマセット州マインヘッド生まれ。
1956年、スリランカ移住。
『幼年期の終り』で衝撃を受けた。なんというかすげえと思った。「太陽系最後の日」は忘れられない一篇。しかし、好み的には『渇きの海』『銀河帝国の崩壊』がいい。
いまいちな『楽園の泉』も好き。そりゃまあ、同一テーマでＳＦ、ＳＦしてるのはシェフィールドの作品だし、カタストロフィを感じるのは『レッド・マーズ』だけど、地味さがいい。
最高作品をあげろと言えば『宇宙のランデヴー』シリーズでしょう。理解できないものを理解できないようにしておく書き方がいい。けど、科学者にしては、教条的な書き方がすごく気になるものではあるのだが。
ともかく、その作品は、それぞれの青春の１ページであり、亡くなってから、改めてその偉大さを感じる。
