ディクソン・カア、ディクソン・カー等表記は様々。ディクスン・カーで統一。いわずもがなであるが不可能犯罪ものや歴史ミステリものを得意とする。

カーの中でも感銘を受けたのが、『ビロードの悪魔』です。
いまでも生きててオルタネートものを書いたら、けっこうな傑作ができあがったにちがいないと密かに思うのであった。カーという作家が、ちょいとひとむかし前のロンドンに行っていたらどうするのだろうね。
ペンシルヴェニア州生まれ、どうしても一世紀前の作家というふうに感じてしまうのは、わたしだけだろうか。実際、ついこの間まで現役だった作家なんだけど、昔の作家だと思うのは、子供の時に読んだためなんだろうと思うけど。
ミステリもたまに読むのは、小学生の時に読んだカーの『踊る人形の謎』に影響されている。傑作『曲がった蝶番』の子供版である。これとヴァン・ダインの『呪われた家の秘密』つまり『グリーン家殺人事件』の二冊が嗜好を決めた。
『曲がった蝶番』の怪奇趣味がたぶんに好きで一時期、カーにはまったことがある。が、あまりにも昔すぎて、いまとなっては覚えていないことが多い。リストを造りながら、しみじみともういちど、読みたい作家なんだなと感じた。
