ペンシルバニア州ブリストル生まれ。ミネソタ大学で物理学を専攻。
大物作家、SFの屋台骨を支えてきたひとりでしょう。ある意味では凡作作家とも言える部分もあります。けど、この作家は他の人には追従できない情熱を持ち続けたと言えると思います。器用貧乏といいますか、どことなく忘れさられていく作家のような気がしてしまいますが、けっして底の浅い作家ではないと思っています。
ハインラインとは、また違う説教臭さを持っていて、説教したい内容が物語のテーマを成す場合が多いように感じます。「救いの手」とか、「王に対して休戦なし」などを読むと北欧系だけど骨の髄からアメリカの作家なんだなと感じます。
最高傑作と、わたしが思っているのは北欧神話をベースにした『折れた魔剣』です。ファンタジィのアンダースンはのびのびとしています。大好きな作家のひとりです。
