地球の長い午後に解放されたフランケンシュタインは、暗い光年の隠生代にひそみ、子供のいない惑星から虚構の大地へ世界Ａの報告書が届き、マラキア・タペストリに織りこまれた爆発星雲の伝説は銀河は砂粒のごとくに流れ落ち、ありえざる星へと、手で育てられた少年を兵士は立てりとはげまし、突然の目覚めへと導かれた。おそまつでしたあ。

さて、大物作家の登場である。頭をカーンと殴られた作家のひとりで、わたしの大好きな作家のひとりです。だから、少々厳しいことも書きます。これで読みたくなくなったと言われると困るのですが。
オールディスは、底の浅さをカバーするイメージとうまさを兼ね備えた作家です。素晴らしい情景の構築力を持っていますが、それだけが先行して、それに伴う説得力に欠ける場合があります。でも、このイメージが素晴らしい。特に『地球の長い午後』は傑作だと、いまだに思っています。つなわたりが、虚空を渡るシーンは、頭に焼きついて離れません。そうした情景を積み重ねることによって、物語を進行させるタイプです。あとから、説明がついていくのですが、提示された情景が、あまりにもすばらしすぎて、説明というか、テーマが、どうしてもぼやけてしまう傾向があります。必ずしも、モノだけではありません。漠としたテーマそのものをイメージさせる場合もあります。ただ、うまくいくとすごいのですが、あまりうまくいかないと腰くだけになってしまうこともあります。消化しきれないテーマを中途半端なまま、提示しようとしたという印象が残ります。
『子供の消えた惑星』の老人だらけの話で、とてもじゃないけど、読む気が失せるようなものでさえ、この人の手にかかると、なぜか傑作に昇華してしまいます。もっとも前半のかったるさを辛抱できればですけど。
ニューウェーブのひとりとして、数えられることもありますが、ニューウェーブの持つ鮮烈なイメージに惑わされただけで、結局、残し得るだけのものはなかったように感じます。代表的というか、訳されているものがこれしかないという『世界Ａの報告書』がそうです。
たった一冊をあげるとなると、『地球の長い午後』ではなく、『解放されたフランケンシュタイン』のほうをあげます。この作品は、オールディスの別の面がでた作品であると感じますし、オールディスらしくないと言えばそれまでなのですが。
『マラキア・タペストリ』の華麗さもすてがたいのです。
『地球の長い午後』をのぞいて、ほとんど手にはいらなくなった作家です。機会があったら、ぜひその一冊を手にとってみてください。期待は裏切らないと思います。1960年代を代表する作家のようですが、本当の活躍は1970年代以降にあったように思えてなりません。ヘルコニアのシリーズの翻訳を心待ちにしているのですが。

ホレイショー・スタブス シリーズはSFでない自伝的要素の強い小説です。正直言うと、あまりおもしろく読めませんでした。向こうでは売れたといういうことですれど。二巻めの後半部分はなかなかな凄味はあります。うーむ。
