Identification

Identification is a very significant stage in the four steps of PRM process. One of the reasons for it is that the fundamental cause of leading to damages stems from individual carelessness or ignorance of risks surrounded in daily life. To compare with companies, besides of the corporations with a single or a couple of employees, there are usually systematic preventive measures against damages. Even though an employee makes a mistake from carelessness, companies have checking systems to stop further mistakes. Of course, there are some companies that incur huge damages by relying on the systems. But, simulating functions usually work to some extent.

Contrarily individuals, in principal, determine their own behaviors by themselves. Since individual determinations are linked directly with behaviors, a single mistake could lead to unretrievable damages. Given that the individual mistakes usually come from carelessness or ignorance, if you are not ignorant of every hazards around you or careful about everything that could happen, you can easily identify many risks lurking in daily life. Therefore, if you can perform good risk identifications, you can remove many of the causes coming from carelessness or ignorance.

More practically, what’s important in developing risk identification skills is imagination. As golf players may know, before actual shots, it’s helpful to imagine that they are supposed to swing golf clubs in their minds for a couple of times. The imagination includes positive scenes such as how they take a back swing, how they hit a ball perfectly. After the imaginations, actual shots will be better with high possibilities. When it comes to doing something, many people may think that they image what they are going to do in advance. However, there are also many people who are going to start their behaviors without good imaginations by the force of habits. It’s partly due to the fact that people are accustomed to every behavior in routine life, or partly that there are too many things occurring to the minds such as what to buy in shopping, what to talk to girlfriends or boyfriends for today’s dating, something that happened yesterday, the day before yesterday, last week at work or school, and will happen tomorrow or later.

People are thinking of or having in minds so many things at the same time that there is no room to command full imaginations of how people behavior specifically in each acting plan. To think again here, if you really want to lead a safe life and get free from any risks as possible, you have to command full imaginations before behaviors. This easy and inexpensive way of methods is very important particularly at the first stage of identifications.

You may fully understand the significance of imaginations for PRM. The next concern will be how you do it. You are doing a broad range of behaviors. Even though you are in bed, you go over many times during sleep in bed. There are some people who fall down onto floors from the bed. Some actively behave only in their dreams. Ranging from behaviors at home to work, leisure and school, there are many things you are doing every day, every hour, every minute. Because of the varieties of behaviors, you often behave by the force of habits as I say.

Here is an idea that you categorize those behaviors into several patterns of activities. For example. In the category of going to office, the activities include commuting from the entrance at home to office buildings. There are walking to the stations, standing on platforms to wait for trains, being crammed in overcrowded insides of cars, walking again to office buildings but this time you may experience a different situation of walking. Hazards surrounding you are different from the walking between houses and stations. Namely you might be exposed to too strong wind between skyscrapers. Other categories are going shopping, leisure such as traveling, long driving or hiking, dating, and staying at home is also included. Although there are differences in behavior patterns from people to people, anybody can categorize into at least several activities. Many people usually have main purposes in doing something. As the case of shopping, you have the purpose of buying particular goods or commodities you want in shopping. Among them, the shopping activities often involve launch or chatting with friends at coffee shops. However, you have some specific patterns in each activity.

Here is an important point in the first stage of identification that you image what may happen to you in each activity. This activity base's imaginations will make it easier to do identify risks surrounding you. In very busy daily life, there are so many things that you may have no time to think of your behavior before doing so. As for the activity base, however, since you can recognize when your activities start and finish, you don't require so much time and energy to imagine what's happening for the short-cut length of activities. As you often listen to this saying, "If you have a lot of things to do or you have complicating problems, you have to subdivide them". The same can be true here. By subdividing (categorizing) your behaviors, you will do what you are going to do in your minds with strong imaginations like the imaginative swings before actual shots. To take the example of shopping again, after leaving the entrance of your house, just when you go out into a sidewalk, you may suddenly come across a bicycle rider at full speed from one side. Or at a department store, while you are fascinated by the very goods you have wanted, you may forget taking your small kid with you for a while. These things happen in ordinary life. Despite the hazardous situations, many people have not incurred a big accident luckily. That's why you do everyday's activities by the force of habits and never think that anything happens to you. Actually, the probabilities of accidents or getting big losses are quite low. Nevertheless, they could happen to you.

What's more important at this stage is not to take it negatively but to take it positively. It seems that all your behaviors in the imagination world probably turn out to be miserable. Every time you take actions in one activity, something bad must occur to you in your minds. You are hit by a speedy bicycle. you fall dawn on the ground, after that, you might be run over by a car. What's worse, it might be a big track. Ow! Vicious circles. If you tend to think of them negatively. Your imaginations go wrong. You must have a grudge against me if one of them really happens to you. My advice is not to imagine anything miserable but to imagine how to care about it. If you can imagine that you come across the bicycle on the sidewalk, you stop before the road and carefully watch both sides instead you suddenly go out into the street. This imagination method helps you imagine how to prevent just in cases. In the process of repeating it without satiety, you come to identify that this spot is risky or that place is the most careful. When someone concentrates on thinking of one thing, sometimes he or she isn't able to see other things. In the case, something unthinkable happens to you. To prevent this, by imaging what you are going to do on activity cases, you can identify risks lurking around you.
