Crisis Management

I have been introducing the method of PRM. It has four steps, identification, evaluation, disposal, finally review. You must fully understand the outlook. I hope you actually carry out the method and lead a safe life in Japan. As you have been following, PRM tends to focus on pre-accident measures rather than post-accident. Even in risk control, you have to take care of it in advance, for example, by taking out insurance, although insurance mostly works after accidents.

Today, crisis management has drawn attention particularly from the corporate field. This method seems like risk management. But in professional terms, it’s different. Specifically, while risk management deal with pre-accident, crisis management copes with post-accident, especially focusing on the moment when it happens. The essence of crisis management is how to contain damages to a minimum in a very short time after incidents. This is useful to save company's brands. Established companies with prestigious brands would get damaged heavily once the brands were harmed by cover-ups, product tampering, product recall, food poising and so on. Those companies are exposed to publicity usually though media so much. Therefore, when companies are in full swing, the media flatter them. But when something wrong is discovered about the companies, the media tend to take the opposite actions such as criticizing heavily, exaggerating tiny mistakes. Brands are tremendously powerful in marketing. At the same time, brands have the potential to kill establishments.

Individuals also have to tackle emergencies during and just shortly after accidents to reduce damages to a minimum. This is the same important as PRM although anybody could not have the presence of mind in the emergent situations. It seems to be almost impossible to look for self-possessions in such cases because people are upset and don't know what to do. If you lose your heads, however, the damages will go bigger. You might suffer second and even third damages due to your inaction. Car accidents, for example, need imminent actions just the moment of accident. In the event that you caused it on a busy road, you would have to keep the victims and yourself to a safe place. If possible, both of the cars should be parked to one side of the road to prevent the second car crash. If the driver were still inside the car with heavy injuries, and what's worse, you saw oil leakage in the opponent car, you would have to rescue the driver and keep away from the car as far as possible for fear of the explosion. After emergent measures, you must call an ambulance according to the degree of injuries. But at this point, even though you judged the counterpart bodily OK or said OK him/herself, unless you are a doctor, you would better take the counterpart to a hospital just added precautions. Anybody doesn't know what's happening inside cars. Namely, there is a high possibility that drivers hit their heads to the parts of the inside such as steering or front glass. Drivers getting involved in traffic accidents might get injured on the insides of the bodies especially on beads. You would have to care about it. During a series of emergent measures, you should not forget to call police.

These are the things you have to do, depending on the situations. There is no time to get upset at emergent cases. In order to tackle emergencies, PRM is helpful particularly at the first stage. It's essential to imagine what would happen to you in your activities at ordinary times. This method will make you have room in your minds and take proper and prompt actions against emergencies.
