好人庵
臘八攝心

好人庵(秋葉玄吾堂頭:現曹洞宗北米開教総監)は、オークランドとバークレイの市境に位置しています。小さいながらも、長牀の坐禅堂があり、毎日のように坐禅会も開催されています。
その坐禅堂において、去る11月26日(日)より一週間、臘八摂心が行われ、私も参加させていただきました。期日が少し早めなのは、翌週に、Los
Angels の禅林寺での攝心が控えているため。
残念ながら、大学のほうがまだ学期中であったため、初日と最終日だけの「中抜き」参加ではありましたが、感慨深い攝心でありました。まさか、北米の地で、しかも正規の坐禅堂において釈尊成道の坐禅を行じることが出来るとは夢にも思っていませんでしたから。

最終日最後の坐禅。
加州州立大バークレイ校のすぐ近くに佇む瀟洒な坐禅堂。秋葉堂頭が、日本全国を托鉢して建立したものです。内単わずかに12と小さなものではありますが、宗門の伝統に則った正規の坐禅堂です。
本当に坐り易く、堂頭が、「一畳の単で坐禅するのは本当の贅沢なんだ」と言われた言葉が良く解りました。
攝心の参加者は、一般参禅者がほとんど。集合写真を見てもお判りいただけるように、日本人(日系)とアメリカ人とが、ちょうど半々位です。
職業は、大学の数学の先生や銀行マン、鍼灸の先生など多彩。高学歴の方がほとんどです。だから、知的好奇心も旺盛で、休憩時間には、いろいろ難しい質問を浴びせかけられました。坐っていれば良いと思っていた私としては、とんだところで冷や汗をかいた次第。

愛犬のゴローとモンジュも加わって、全員で記念撮影。坐禅堂前にて。
攝心全体の雰囲気は、いたってアットホーム。典座は、参加者が日替わりで担当します。
面白かったのは、誰が典座にあたっているのか、堂頭和尚が知らなかったりすること。皆さん、自発的に配役を買って出ているのです。本当に、だれに強制されるでもなく、自然に攝心が進んでゆく、そんな感じでした。
それに、当然ながら、皆さん極めて日本通。精進料理も本格的。さらに、食事の時にも、しっかりと応量器で展鉢をし、上手に箸を使って食事をされていました。

攝心明けの12月3日(日)、好人庵・桑港寺の両山において成道会法要が勤修されました。
私は、桑港寺の法要に随喜させていただきました。
ご住職の法話。この後、御齋の供養がありました。
