「灰の中の宝石」とは、副題にもあるとおり、「仏舎利」のこと。日本中世の舎利信仰について論じたのが本書なのですが、その「舎利」の扱い方が、私の想像とはまったく違っていました。
日本の舎利信仰に対する私のイメージが達磨宗の「六祖普賢舎利」を中心としたものであり、極めて偏狭なものだったのがその一因。だから最初は、政治経済と舎利との結びつきがどうしても理解できませんでした。
しかし、フォール先生の解説をうかがってその疑問も瓦解。この本は、宗派の正当性の主張としての「高僧舎利(含む仏舎利)」ではなく、奈良の大仏に匹敵する「国の要」としての、「仏舎利」とその受容形態について論じたものだったのでありました。
専門外ということもあって、論旨の独自性などの詳細についてはコメント不可能ですが、とにかく詳細な論説には驚かされました。とくにグロッサリーがものすごい。ほとんど辞書並です。
もちろん、個人的には、舎利信仰を権力者の側からのみ論じすぎている印象がありましたが、少なくとも、その逆の民間信仰や宗派意識下の「舎利信仰」のみを意識していた私にとって、再度「舎利」の位置づけを考え直す契機となりそうです。
