■クリスマス定番の詩　
The Night Before Christmasとは

現代のサンタクロースのイメージ　―　クリスマスイブに、サンタがトナカイに引かれたそりに乗ってやってくる　―　が定着したのは、1822年にThe Night Before Christmasという詩が米国の新聞で発表され、大ヒットになってからです。２世紀にわたり人々の心を暖めてきた、クリスマス定番中の定番。
匿名の詩でしたが、のちに神学者のClement C. Moore  が自分の詩集に掲載しました。しかし文体からHenry Livingston説も強いです(書かれたのは19世紀初頭か)。
米国では古典となり、クリスマスイブには家族でこの詩を読むことがはやりました。A much-loved poem about Santa　別名“A Visit from St. Nicholas"

有名な古典なので、"the most famous Christmas poem in the United States "や「もっともパロディー版が多く作られている英語詩｣と言われています。映画などにもパロディー版があります。

■The Night Before Christmas　1903年復刻絵本

以下は、1903年にシカゴの W. B. CONKEY COMPANYが出版した本の文と挿絵です。1822当時のものとはわずかに書き換えられています。以下のものは一部、伊藤が用字を一般的なものに編集し、オンラインで復刻したものです(著作権保護期間は終了)。一部、訳を付けました。
英詩なので韻を踏んでいます(a repetition of identical or similar terminal sounds )。全編にゆっくりしたビートがありますので、リズムをつけて楽しく音読してください。
赤字は現代にも続く、クリスマスのイメージです。

'Twas the night before Christmas, and all through the house,　('Twas = It wasの古い略)

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,　　　noise
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of midday to objects below—
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer.　　(強調)　deerは単複同形




With a little old driver so lively and quick,　　(sleighのdriverはつまり…)
I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.
More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,   　sleighを引く動物
And he whistled and shouted and called them by name — 

"Now, Dasher! Now, Dancer!  Now, Prancer! Now, Vixen!        (各トナカイの名前。有名なくだり)
On, Comet! On, Cupid! On, Dunder and Blixen!
To the top of the porch, to the top of the wall!
Now, dash away! Dash away! Dash away! All!"

As dry leaves before the wild hurricane fly,
When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky,　　　rise
So up to the house-top the coursers they flew
With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas, too.
And then in a twinkling I heard on the roof          twinkleぐらいの短時間
The prancing and pawing of each tiny hoof.   　　　ひづめ
As I drew in my head, and was turning around,
Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.　　　弾み

　





He was dressed all in fur from his head to his foot,
And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;
A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.　　　     sell
His eyes — how they twinkled! His dimples, how merry!      えくぼ　happy
His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry;
His droll little mouth was drawn up in a bow,                       funny
And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow.

THE REINDEER AND THE SLEIGH

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,　　　  part
And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath.
He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,        丸　太
And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.
A wink of his eye, and a twist of his head,
Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread.

　


He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,
And filled all the stockings — then turned with a jerk,   　　くいっ
And laying his finger aside of his nose,
And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose.
He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
And away they all flew, like the down of a thistle;　　　　
But I heard him exclaim ere he drove out of sight,　　　　   before

"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!"

クリスマスイブに恋人や家族と過ごした人も、そうでなかった人も
同じように心温まる英語の絵本を紹介したい。

一冊は、``The Night Before Christmas  '' というポップアップ絵本だ。
3500円ぐらいしたと思うが、とても夢があって、ページをめくりながら
ポップアップのすばらしさに素直に感動してしまいます。

ねずみも寝静まる夜に、サンタのおじさんが7匹（8匹だったかな）の
トナカイを引き連れやってくる。
トナカイを引いている様子や、そっと煙突をおりるところのポップアップが
美しい。読むととても幸せな気持ちになる、大人向けの上質の絵本である。
