¡ãKutcharo-ko¡ä

25-26 July 2009
Hamatonbetsu Town, Hokkaido Prefecture

¡¡KODOMO Biodiversity: Kutcharo-ko was held in Hamatonbetsu Town, Hokkaido from 25th-26th July. This is the first official KODOMO Biodiversity program by Ramsar center Japan, following the trial program KODOMO Biodiversity: Kume-jima in April. Thirty-nine active participants from around the nation joined the program, including twelve from local Kutcharo-ko, four from Akkeshi-ko and Bekanbeushi-shitsugen, two from Kushiro-shitsugen, seven from Sarobetsu-genya, ten from Miyajima-numa, and one each from Yatsu-higata, Fujimae-higata, Shinji-ko, and Manko.

¡¡Proffessor Motokazu Ando from Tokyo University of Agriculture started the first day with a brief lecture on ¡ÈExtinction of Japanese Otter Lutra Nippon and Biodiversity¡É. Participants then went out into the field in groups, and searched for Treasures of Kutcharo-ko, which could be forms of life or sceneries that are distinct to Kutcharo-ko. Though the cloudy and drizzly weather and chilly temperature was unfortunate, participants were able to enter the lake and look for shrimps and lobsters using nets with assistance from staff members of the town, and learned about the local history and nature through displays at the water birds watching facility.

¡¡Back indoors, participants discussed on the themes of ¡Èbiodiversity¡É and ¡ÈTreasures of Kutcharo-ko¡É. Each group came up with six Treasures and its illustrations, ranked up the top three ¡ÈKutcharo-ko marvelous ranking¡É and discussed on the catch copy.
¡¡On the next day, each group presented their ¡ÈKutcharo-ko marvelous ranking¡É, under facilitator Daisuke Nakamura. Participants chose six Treasures and its illustrations to represent Kutcharo-ko. They also decided the main catch copy, and created the poster for KODOMO Biodiversity: Kutcharo-ko.

The six Treasures and the main catch copy chosen by the thirty-nine participants are as follows:

1. ¡ÉA Happy Ring of Swans¡É ¡ÈKutcharo-ko Itself¡É ¡ÉMany Life¡É
2. ¡ÉWhite-tailed Sea Eagle and Steller¡Çs Sea Eagle¡É
¡ÉJapanese Clayfish¡É
3. ¡ÉFun Kutcharo-ko¡É

¡¡KODOMO Biodiversity: Kutcharo-ko was one of the events organized for the 20th Anniversary of Kutcharo-ko¡Çs registration as a Ramsar Site. Conferences for Hokkaido Ramsar Network and symposiums were held simultaneously. Members of the Conference visited KODOMO Biodiversity on the second day, and the events ended lively with everybody¡Çs support.
We would like to thank members of Hamatonbetsu Town, who supported the event in advance, and also provided delicious dinner tent management during the program.

Thank you very much, everybody!
