1. Introduction

In language teaching, the Internet is increasingly being seen as a valuable source of linguistic data and as a communication tool. The major attractions of the Internet for language teaching and learning are stated in Felix 1999 as:

I personally have come to see it as useful for language teaching because I had already become familiar with the Internet through my hobby, music. It is in pursuing this hobby that I developed the skills for using the Internet, so it was natural for me to think of integrating these skills with language teaching.

In our contact with teachers through our inservices and seminars, we have seen a growth in the number of teachers who are actively seeking to incorporate the Internet in their Japanese teaching.
