Swadesh is my best film
Nandita Das sat with regular moviegoers in a theatre in Chennai to gauge their response to the film Azhagi in which she played the title role. And Mani Ratnam’s Kannathil Mutham Itaal in which she plays a member of Tamil militant group was due for release the next day. Down in Kerala, Kannagi, directed by Jayraj, was also due for release. With the permission of producer Jayakumar of Azhagi, Nandita took an hour off to answer the media’s queries.
What made you accept a film by a debutante director (Thankar Pachan)?
When the offer came to me, I decided to do it if I found the subject interesting. I flew down to Chennai and met Thankar Pachan. He narrated the story to me and as soon as the story session was over, he looked me in the eye and said, “Look, I want to know right away whether you are doing the film or no.” At first I thought he was mad. However, I knew that it is people like him who make good movies. And so I agreed to do the film. (Laughs)
How did you feel after watching your film in a theatre with the audience?
The reactions from the audience was exactly what we expected from them. It gave me an insight to the views of the Tamil audience.
Brief us on your role in Mani Ratnam’s film.
Actually, it’s a very short role but it was very satisfying to work. One gets to learn a lot of the medium when working with directors like Mani Ratnam.
Which is the best film that you have worked so far?
nIn all, I have done 14 films and three of them are not in Hindi. My best film is yet to come and it is Swadesh, directed by Mrinal Sen. I play a Muslim woman living with her second husband.
Have you signed any more films in Tamil?
No. I am yet to receive interesting offers. I do keep getting offers from Telugu films but nothing has excited me so far.
Are you fluent with Tami language yet?
A little. I do manage to read the posters, though.
Can something be asked about your film Fire?
Sure. I am not ashamed of Fire. Ask me.
Did you not feel awkward doing scenes about lesbian relationship in the film?
The character enters into a lesbian relationship because of the circumstances. It’s the character and not me. The story and situation was created not just to just create a sensation or titillate. I have no regrets doing the film.
Coming to your personal life, have you found your Mr. Right yet?
Actually, (laughs) Mr. Right is still elusive.
