デカルトというフランスの哲学者は「われ思うゆえにわれあり」という言葉を残しました。このWebサイトの題名はここから来ています。think or die、つまり「考えろ。さもなくば死ね」という意味です。（当サイト開設当時の旧タイトルは『水のテマティック』です）

1970年以降に生まれた世代は、これからを生きるために、今まで当たり前とされてきた考え方を、根本的に見直さなければならない、という意味です。

このページでは、1970年代に生まれた筆者の視点から、この国の文化・社会・経済などを、世代間、男女間、日本と海外の間など、さまざまな価値観のギャップに注目しながら考えます。

たしかにこの国は「おじさん世代」の血のにじむような努力によって、欧米にならぶ大国になりました。しかし同時に、一人ひとりの違いを軽んじて、みんなが同じ方向に進んできたために、さまざまな「ひずみ」を社会に残しています。

にもかかわらず「おじさん世代」は、これまでと同じ閉鎖的で均一的な「ムラ社会」を維持しようとしています。いままで大多数の日本人のあり方を、根っこのところで規定してきた「サラリーマン社会」こそ、閉鎖的で均質な「ムラ社会」の典型と言えるでしょう。

「おじさん世代」が自分たちの成功体験にこだわって、古い慣習を捨てられないのはしかたないとしても、僕らの世代は新しい時代にふさわしいスタイルを、自分たちで考え出さなければなりません。

その第一歩は、今まで当たり前と思われてきたことを、もう一度考え直してみることです。僕らはこの「疑う」という姿勢をデカルトから学びなおし、もっと先へ推し進めようと思います。

次の時代の価値観のための思考実験。このページは、いってみればそのようなものです。

MISSION: THINK

STRATEGY: DOUBT everything until I can believe it is adequate. I don't have to believe it is right. I cannot believe anything is right because everything should be open to following possible doubts.

Descartes said cogito ergo sum. The title of this web site comes from this word. Think or die means you have to keep on thinking, otherwise you should die.

The generation born in 1970's has to drastically re-think the way of thinking which has been considered as self-evident.

In this web site, from the point of view of those who were born in 1970's this country's culture, society and economy will be argued by putting stress upon the gaps between generations, between women and men, between Japan and overseas, etc...

It is true that Japan has become as economically strong nation as Western advanced countries thanks to the sweating blood efforts of Ojisan Generation, baby-boom generation. But at the same time, the rapid growth has produced various side effects in Japanese society.

Nevertheless baby-boom generation tries to maintain the same homogeneous society as before. The salarymen society is a typical example of exclusive and homogeneous Japanese traditional society.

We cannot help that baby-boom generation sticks to their successful experience of economic growth after World War II. But we, new generation, should invent an appropriate style for the new age.

And its first step is to re-think what is considered as self-evident so far. We'd like to learn this methodological doubt from Descartes and to push it further.

For the new generation's philosophy, we'd like to make an essay at thinking. That's the concept of this web site.
