今日、品川グランドコモンズで初めてのオフ会を開いた。事前に参加希望をとったところ、このWebサイトの読者から６人の方が参加を希望して集まって下さった。大雨のために電車が遅れて、時間どうりに出席できなかった方もいらっしゃったが、オフ会そのものは大成功だったと言ってもいいのではないか。僕自身はオフ会が成功するかどうか少し神経質になっていたのだが、参加者のご協力のおかげで各人のお気に入りの本について楽しく話し合うことができた。参加してくださった読者のみなさんに感謝したい。今僕は改めてこのWebサイトを更新し続けていこうと思ったとともに、第二回のオフ会をたぶん10月に開こうという気になっている。

６人の参加者のうち、一人だけが大学生で、残りは会社員だった。５人の会社員のうち４人までが情報技術に関係する仕事をしていた。まあこのサイトではたびたび情報技術関係の話題を取り上げているので、当然といえば当然かもしれない。参考までに、参加者のうち１人だけが女性だった。ほとんどの参加者が例えば数か月前など、つい最近このサイトの存在を知ったということが驚きだった。

オフ会を円滑に進めるために、僕は参加者に事前に「宿題」を出させて頂いた。その宿題とはお気に入りの本についての説明も含めた自己紹介を準備しておくことだった。参加者の中には話すことを書き下した紙まで準備して頂いた方もおり、すべての参加者から、実生活でもきっとまじめな人なのだろうなという印象を受けた。こういった勤勉な人たちが自分のサイトの読者だと思うと、非常に幸福を感じる。

僕自身もふくめて参加者全員が自己紹介とお気に入りの本の紹介を順番におこなった。１番目の参加者は投資顧問として働いている方で、２冊の本を紹介して下さった。一つはロシア語通訳で、たびたびテレビでも見かける米原万理著『嘘つきアーニャの真っ赤な真実』。もう一冊は暴力団関係者との非合法な取引があったとされ、クレイフィッシュを辞めざるを得なくなった同社の元社長である松島庸著『追われ者』という本だ。

２番目の参加者は社内情報システム部門でシステムエンジニアとして働いている方で、『五感で恋する名画鑑賞術』で、人気のあるテレビ番組『たけしの誰でもピカソ』を企画した美術評論家、西岡文彦氏が書いた本だ。この参加者は美術館を、展示品だけでなく設備やインフラの面も含めて格付けする非営利団体に参加しているということで、学生時代は理系だったのに、今は美術にも興味を持ち始めているとのことだった。

３番目の参加者は唯一の大学生で、ベストセラー『買ってはいけない』に対する強烈な反論の書『それは違う！』や、『偽善系』などの本を書いたフリーライターの日垣隆の著作を紹介して下さった。彼によれば日垣の書物には左翼系マスメディアの一方的な議論を批判したものもあるということだ。この大学生の参加者は大学では環境工学を人文科学的な側面から学んでいるという。上述のシステムエンジニアの方同様、この参加者も理系と文系の中間に立っていると言えるだろう。

４番目の参加者も、社内情報システム部門のシステムエンジニアとして働いている方で、橋爪大三郎、小浜逸郎をふくむ７人の社会学者が書いた『天皇の戦争責任・再考』という本を紹介して頂いた。この参加者は天皇の戦争責任そのものには中立の立場だが、戦時中に天皇が果たした役割についていくつかの史実を学べたということで、この本を評価されているようだった。この参加者のお気に入りの本も彼の仕事と直接の関係はない。僕のサイトの読者はどうやら知的好奇心のかたまりのような人が多いようだ。読者の皆さんの知性を、僕は誇りに思いさえしている。

５番目の参加者は働く母親で、日本人の女性小説家、桐野夏生の『グロテスク』という小説をご紹介頂いた。この小説のモチーフは、かの有名な東電OL殺人事件らしい。この参加者はジェンダー（文化的性差）の問題にも関心をお持ちのようで、興味深い論点をいくつか提示して頂いた。例えば、女性は自身の怒りを直裁に表現できない、日本のエリートの中でも60年代に生まれて、人生のすべてを仕事にささげた両親の影響を強く受けている人たちは、完璧を目指した末に燃え尽きて普通の生活から脱落し、たとえば新興宗教や犯罪行為に手を染めるようになる、僕らは子供たちにどうやって試合に勝つかだけでなく、敗北からどう這い上がるかについても教えるべきだ、などなど。

６人目の参加者は、携帯電話の動作試験をするシステムエンジニアとして働いている方だが、ITプロジェクト管理の方法論についての本『PMBOKによるITプロジェクトマネージメント実践法』という本をご紹介頂いた。この参加者の方は今ちょうど30人ばかりのプロジェクトチームのリーダをやっていて、新入社員や外部要因の教育にてこずっているとのことだ。僕もこのようなITプロジェクト管理の問題にかかわっているので、他人事とは思われなかった。

以上、参加者の発表の要約をお読みになって分かるように、このWebサイトの読者のみなさんは物事をさまざまな観点から考えようと努力されている。たしかに職場では一つの事柄に集中することが効率的かもしれないが、実生活ではそのような態度は非常に危険性が高い。何か深刻な問題に突き当たったとき、もし一つの観点しか持ち合わせていなかったとしたら、僕らは自分たちの生命をも危険にさらすことになるかもしれない。僕らはつねに自分が現実にやっていることについて客観的に考える努力をするべきであり、自分が実際にやっていることと距離を保つには、自分自身を時に疑ってみた方がよい。このWebサイトでも繰り返し述べていることだが、「誇張懐疑」は近代合理主義を確立したデカルトが僕らに遺した、最大の贈り物の一つなのだ。

Today we held the first off-line meeting at Shinagawa Grand Commons. Six readers of this web site gathered. Some participants couldn't arrive on time because of the railwey trouble caused by heavy rain. For me this is the first time to host this kind of meeting. So I felt a little bit nervous about the success of the off-line meeting. But thanks to the cooperation of participants we could have good time talking about each person's favorite books. I would like to acknowledge the participating readers for attending at the off-line meeting. Now I'm much more motivated to continue updating this web site and to have the second off-line meeting maybe in October.

Among six participants, only one was a college student and the rest were business persons. The jobs of four out of the five business persons seem to be related to the information technology. We can saythat it is natural because many essays on this web site treat IT related matters. One of the participants was female, just for your information. I was surprised to hear that most of the participants recently recognized the existence of this web site, for example several months ago.

In order to proceed the off-line meeting smoothly I gave the participants a 'homework' in advance. The homework was to prepare the self-introduction including the explanation about each person's favorite book. Some participants prepared even the papers on which the summary of his/her speech was written. All the participants gave me the impression of being earnest about his/her own life. I feel very happy to know that these kind of good people are the diligent readers of this web site.

All participants including me made self-introduction and presented the favorite books in turn. The first participant, working as financial advisor, introduced two books. One was Usotsuki Arnia no Makkana Shinjitsu (Absolute Truth of Liar Arnia) written by Mari Yonehara, Russian interpreter who sometimes appear on Japanese TV programs. The other was Oware-mono (The Expelled) written by Isao Matsushima, the former president of Crayfish Co., Ltd. forced to leave the company because of an alleged illegal business dealing with a certain gang group.

The second participant, working as system engineer in the inhouse information system department, introduced Gokan de Koisuru Meiga Kansho Jutsu (How to Appreciate the Famous Paintings with Five Senses) written by Fumihiko Nishioka, art critic who made a plan for the popular TV program entitled Takeshi no Daredemo Piccaso (Everybody can become a Piccaso). This participant is a member of an NPO which rates the quality of museums not only in the aspect of the colletion but also in the aspect of facilities and infrastructure. He studied science as a college student but now he has come to get interested in the art.

The third participant, college student, introduced the books written by Takashi Higaki, freelance writer who wrote books such as Sore ha Chigau (That's Not True!) which is a strong objection against the best seller Katte ha Ikenai (Don't Buy It!), Gizen-kei (Hypocrisy), etc... He said that some of Higaki's books criticize the one-sided arguments of the leftist mass media. This student studies the humane studies aspect of environment engineering. So he also stands in the middle of arts and sciences just like the participant mentioned above.

The fourth participant, working as system engineer in the inhouse information system department, explained about Tenno no Senso Sekinin Saiko (Re-think about Emperor's Responsibilities in the Last War) written by seven sociologists including Daizaburo Hashizume, Itsuo Obama, etc... This participant is neutral about Emperor's war responsibilities but highly evaluates this book because he could learn some historical facts about Emperor's roles during the war period. This participant's favorite book neither has direct relation with his own job. My readers seem to be full of intellectual curiosity. I'm proud of my readers' intelligence.

The fifth participant, working mother, introduced Japanese female novelist Natsuo Kirino's novel Grotesque. She explained that the motif of this fiction is a murder case of a female office worker in TEPCO which was very controversial several years ago in Japan. This participant is also interested in gender issues and presented some topics regarding this novel. For example, women can't express their own anger in a straightforward way. Japanese elites, born in 60's and strongly influenced by their parents' attitude of devoting the whole life into one thing, tend to burn out after striving for the complete achievement of their own objectives, to drop out from ordinary lives and to devote themselves into, for example, cult groups or some illegal activities. We should teach our children not only how to win the games but also how to recover from the defeat, etc...

The sixth participant, working as system engineer for testing mobile phones, introduced a book about IT project management methodology, PMBOK ni yoru IT Project Management Jissen Ho (Practical Methodology of IT Project Management Based on PMBOK). This participant is now the leader of a project team which consists of about 30 members and has difficulties in training new employees and external partners who know nothing about the work. Since I'm also dealing with such issues of IT project management, I felt this participant's issues like my own.

As you read in the summary of the participants' presentations described above, all of my readers try to think about things from various points of view. Indeed focusing on one thing is efficient in the working place. But in our real lives such attitude is very risky. When we encounter some serious problems, we might risk our lives if we have only one point of view, just like that murdered female worker in TEPCO. We should always try to think objectively about what we are doing in reality. In order to keep that distance from what we are actually doing, sometimes we had better doubt ourselves. As I repeatedly mentioned in this web site, 'hyperbole doubt' is one of the greatest gifts from Descartes who established the modern rationalism.
