Cormorant Fishing
The Nagara River, Gifu City

Ukai or cormorant fishing is a traditional way of catching sweetfish with tamed cormorants. It has been practiced since 8th century. Usyo or the fisherman who manages cormorants to catch fish is an officer of Imperial Household Ministry. You can see cormorant fishing from May 11 to October 15, every year.
It is difficult to take a picture of both balefire and cormorants clearly. I hope this tradition will last forever.
