Bewick's Swan
Toyoshina-machi, Minami-Azumi-gun, Nagano Prefecture

We can see many Bewick's swans in the Saigawa River near Toyoshina IC of Nagano Highway. A Bewick's swan is 120cm long. The beak of a whooper swan has a large yellow portion, its tip being sharp, while that of a Bewick's swan is small, its tip being round.
They visited the shallow lakes and marshes of depth of water as a winter bird. They fly here in mid-October, and fly away towards Siberia early in March. "The Alps Swan Club" says there are 817 swans passing the winter in Azumino as of February 11.
