In the Championship, fifteen regional representatives(*) including nine regional college football league champions and the winner of Prime Minister Cup are qualified for the championship.
*) One college team is selected to represent each of the nine regional college football leagues. Three extra teams are selected to represent the Kanto colleges league. Two extra teams are selected to represent the Kansai colleges league. One extra team is selected to represent the Kyushu colleges league.
If two teams are level at the end of regulation time, 20 minutes (in the final, 30 minutes) of 'V-goal'(golden-goal) extra time shall be played.
If the match is still undecided, the winning team (in the final, the winner) shall be decided in a penalty shoot-out.
