Gary Burton
Gary BurtonはVibraphone奏者である。
60年代にWest Corst Rockの影響をまともにくらった形で
今で言えばFusionと呼ばれるであろうロックっぽいJazzで人気を集めた。
GuitarにLarry Coryellを迎え、Chicago Blues のイディオムを盛り込んだImprovisationが同時代の
サイケデリックなフレーバーをプンプンと匂わせていたのだった。
髪は長髪、コスチュームもサイケ調で、現代の新しいJAZZを作るという方法論を提示していたのである。
"Duster"が大評判となり、"Lofty Fake Anagram"，前衛JAZZの才媛Carla Bleyの手による組曲"A Genuine Tong Funeral"
と立て続けにアルバムを発表し、68年の"Carnegie Hall Concert"までBurton-Coryellのセットで4枚のLPをリリースした。
曲の提供者としてはCARLA BLEY, 旧友MICHAEL GIBBSと言ったところが目立つ。Gibbsは英国の
作曲家でやはり英国のJazz/Rock musicianと頻繁に競演していた。BurtonのLPでもTromboneで加わっている。
その後，Django Reinherdt と活動していたことで有名なJazz Violinist Stephane Grappelli, Charles Lloyde Quartetを抜けて
自分のスタイルを模索し続けていたKeith Jarrettなどと傑作をものし、71年にAvant-Garde の世界から足を洗った
Chick CoreaとDuoを組み、"Crystal Silence"をリリースして話題をかっさらった。
このduoは79年にも再結成し、来日している。私も郵便貯金ホールで聴きました。
