1) What were the reasons/motivations behind your decision in joining with “The Count of Monte Cristo” project?

I accepted the offer to work with Gonzo for several reasons. The story is a classic tale of love ,betrayal and revenge. All the classic ingredients for passionate interplay between the various characters. This alone gives the musician a lot of scope within a wide range of dynamics.
ゴンゾとのお仕事のオファーを請けたのには幾つかの理由があります。まず、ストーリーが愛、裏切りそして復讐を描いた名作であるということ。多様なキャラクター間での情熱的な相互作用に必要なクラッシックな要素が全てここにあります。ミュージシャンとしてはこの要素だけで幅広いダイナミズムにおける多くのとらえ方ができるのです。

Also, Mr Maeda, himself, came to London on a very lightning trip to ask me in person. This was a gracious act in itself and of course I was flattered. I have always wanted to try my hand at soundtrack music and this was a golden opportunity, seeing that it combined both songs and musical landscapes.

2) What initial thoughts/impressions do you have on the original “The Count of Monte Cristo” novel by Alexander Dumas?
原作「モンテ・クリスト伯」についてどんなイメージを持っていらっしゃいますか

The original story is one that most people of my generation, at least in France and Britain will know of. However what I like about this version is the additional mephistolean arrangement between Edmond and the creature. This reminds me a bit of the degenerating power of the devil when you accept his help. This is a theme you can find in Faust, even lord of the Rings with the corruptive power of the ring, or even the relationship that a junkie has with heroin or those who seek the protection of the Mafia.
原作のストーリーは、少なくともフランスそしてイギリスに住んでいる私と同世代の人々なら誰でも知っているものです。しかしこのバージョンで私が気に入った点は、エドモンと怪物のメフィストフェレス的な新たな関係性の設定にあります。これにより、悪魔の助けを借りる時には彼らの歪んだエネルギーを受け入れなくてはいけないのだ、ということを思い出しました。これは「ファウスト」、そして人をだめにするリングのパワーを持つ「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」の中でも描かれており、更にはヘロイン中毒者とヘロイン、もしくはマフィアに救いを求める人々とマフィアの間の関係性と同様のものです。

3) What would you most like to commit to/ emphasise in designing the original music?
音楽をご担当されるにあたってどのように取り組まれましたか？

I tried to emphasise what I considered the essence of each character or group of characters bearing in mind the psychology ascribed to them by Gonzo.
ゴンゾが設定したそれぞれのキャラクターの心理を考慮しつつ、私が各キャラクターもしくはキャラクターグループの本質ととらえたエッセンスをできる限り強調するようにしました。
