Smoking hinders fertility treatments in men

Men hoping to have children with the help of fertility techniques should stop smoking because it can decrease their chances of success, medical experts said. 生殖医療技術により子供を望む男性は禁煙すべきである。 喫煙は妊娠の成功率を減少させるからである。

Smoking alters DNA in sperm and doctors in Germany suspect the changes can affect the embryo conceived through in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a technique for male infertility in which a single sperm is injected into the egg. 喫煙は精子のDNAを障害し、男性不妊の治療技術である 人工受精（IVFやICSIなど、卵子に精子を注入する技術)に 影響を及ぼします。

"It can be assumed that quitting smoking will be beneficial to couples undergoing IVF or ICSI,'' said Dr. Michael Zitzmann of the Institute of Reproductive Medicine in Germany.  Institute of Reproductive Medicine in Germanyの Dr. Michael Zitzmannさんは言いました。 「禁煙はIVFやICSIなどの生殖医療に良い影響を与えます。」

He told a meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology that the odds of IVF or ICSI not working are two to three times higher for male smokers than non-smokers.  European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology の会議でZitzmannさんは言いました。 「喫煙者が IVF や ICSIによる人工授精が失敗するオッズ非は 非喫煙者に比べると２〜３倍大きい。

"Smoking probably has an adverse effect during the fertilization procedure, but, in addition, smoking damaged the DNA in sperm and this may hamper the development of the embryo,'' Zitzmann added. 喫煙は受精の過程に 悪い影響を及ぼすと考えられます。さらに、喫煙は精子のDNA に障害を及ぼし、胚の発達を障害します。」

In a study of 301 couples having IVF and ICSI treatment, 22% of women with partners who smoked became pregnant through ICSI, compared to 38% with non-smoking partners.  IVF や ICSIによる人工授精を受けた ３０１組の夫婦の調査に よると、ICSCによる人工授精では、喫煙男性の精子による妊娠 成功率は２２％でしたが、非喫煙男性の精子による妊娠の成功 率は３８％でした。

Zitzmann and his team found similar results in couples having IVF. IVFによる人工授精でも同様な結果となりました。

"These results show that men who smoke, significantly decrease the success rates of assisted reproduction procedures, not only in IVF, but also in ICSI,'' according to Zitzmann. 「我々の調査により、男性の喫煙は人工受精の成功率を著しく 低下させることが明らかになりました。IVFのみならずICSIでも同 様の結果が得られました。」

If both partners smoke, the impact is worse because smoking also has an adverse affect on women. Women who smoke produce fewer retrievable eggs. もし、夫婦の双方が喫煙者の場合、妊娠の可能性は更に低くな ります。喫煙する女性は妊娠可能な卵子が少ないのです。

 "We would like to stress to couples that smoking not only affects their own health, but under the special circumstances of assisted reproduction, it represents a needless risk to women undergoing futile hormonal stimulation, as well as an unnecessary financial burden,'' said Zitzmann.　 我々は妊娠を望む夫婦に喫煙は両親の健康を害するのみならず、 生殖にも悪い影響を与え、本来は不必要な、妊娠のための性腺 刺激ホルモン投与の危険や不必要な医療費を支出することに なると警告しています。
