"I appreciate this opportunity to welcome Japanese photographers to the BTZS community. I think you will find the BTZS principles easy to understand, and I hope the BTZS methods will help you to work more effectively and with greater confidence, both in the field and in the darkroom."
The following is a quatation from Phil's e-mail.
We now offer 3 different workshops: the original BTZS workshop deals with the testing of materials, sensitometry, process controls, and metering methods, with some field work. This is the basic workshop that follows the material in the book quite closely.
The "Intro" workshop is intended primarily for photographers who are experienced in small and medium format photography, and are interested in trying large format work to see if they like it. Fred Newman (Darkroom Innovations owner) supplies camera outfits (one view camera outfit for each two students) and all materials, and we provide the students with exposure and development information. We demonstrate view camera operation, metering methods, and the tube development procedure, then spend most of the time photographing, and processing the film to check the results.
The "Alumni" workshop is for people who have attended a BTZS session and want to spend their time applying the principles, and refining their skills. We take field trips and process the films every day.
All of the workshops run for 4 1/2 days, typically Wednesday through Sunday noon. The workshop schedule for this summer is:
BTZS workshop June 9-13 Intro workshop July 14-18 Alumni workshop August 4-8 Interested photographers should contact Darkroom Innovations to register for these sessions. Enrollment is limited. We prefer to have no more than 10 students in each workshop and will run the sessions with as few as 5.
All of the workshops are held in Flagstaff, Arizona, and we use the darkroom facilities of the Photo Department of the University of Northern Arizona. This is a scenic area at an altitude of about 7500 feet, near an old volcanic lava field, and within easy driving distance of some Indian ruins and the Grand Canyon.
Each student receives a PowerDial and a free copy of the Expo/Dev program as a workshop bonus. We also supply the PlotterPlus program for people who are using older Macintosh computers; but that program won't run on the new G-3 machines.
