Background Information

　1752(宝暦2)年浅田一鳥、浪岡鯨児らが合作した全五段の時代物浄瑠璃『倭仮名在原系図』で、『蘭平物狂』は四段目にあたる。中納言在原行平(818〜893)は、美貌のプレイボーイで『伊勢物語』の主人公として知られる 在原 ( ありわらの ) 業平 ( なりひら ) の兄で、物語は皇位継承問題を題材とした政治劇だが、現在では『蘭平物狂』のみが演じられている。『蘭平物狂』は、1953(昭和28)年に明治座で尾上松緑が復活上演し、坂東八重之助が工夫した立廻りによって人気演目となった。
