Kanadehon Nimai Ezoshi

English-topstory

'Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan' was written by Tsuruya Nanboku as one of the episodes of 'Kanadehon Chushingura', and was first performed in 1825. At the time, 'Yotsuya Kaidan' and 'Chushingura' were shown at the same time. The first half of 'Yotsuya Kaidan' and 'Chushingura' were performed at the first day, and the second half of them were performed at the second day. Audiences enjoyed through the two days. It was very luxury, wasn't it?

Ichikawa Ennosuke adopted that idea, and made two plays into this play, 'Yotsuya Kaidan Chushingura'. Its world is 'Chushingura', but its basic story is 'Yotsuya Kaidan'. However, there were many tricks to borrow from 'Chushingura' in this play. Some of them were difficult to notice, but even if I didn't know 'Chushingura', I'm sure that I could enjoy the tricks themselves. I think that his idea was very good, because I enjoyed enough at the night.

Iemon is the worst guy in 'Yotsuya Kaidan', and Sadakuro is an impressive bad guy in 'Chushingura'. Both of them were cool beauty guys, sometimes too cruelty, though. But Sadakuro appeared as a secret agent of Yuranosuke this time, so I felt that Iemon was a bad guy highly. And I feel that Iemon is too bad to be loved by Oume. She is just a baby. Although there was no problem of course, I would have liked to watch Sadakuro's bad element more.

The most impressive person this time was Koshioda Matanojo whom Ichikawa Enshiro performed. He didn't appear on the stage often, but he had very impressive beauty. I expect him in the future.

At the ending of this play, there was a giant waterfalls scene. Real water was used this time, and it was very enjoyable. It became the best scene, because actors seemed enjoying the real water very much. (2003,7,5)
