GOLGOTHA author : John Gardner There is a small library in our office. There is a small corner that employees can put their books in instead of throwing them away. This is one of them. Although it was very interesting, I would have liked to read it 20years before. I thought it was a science fiction, but it was a historical simulation novel now. Anyway, I could enjoy it. NOMONHAN author : Alvin D. Coox This is the record of the Nomonhan incident that was a border war between Japan and Russia in 1939. It was written by an America military historian. I'm interested in the border war, so I expected one of the most able Japanese writers, Shiba Ryotaro to write about it, but he had died before he did it. At that war, the casualty rate was more than 70%. It's an unbelievable number. Even the bloody campaign of Guadalcanal's casualty rate was 34%. And after the war, some officers who came back living were forced to kill themselves. The author analysed very cool about even Japanese conventional culture. Its translator wrote that most scientific studies that were written in Japanese weren't common to foreigners. I think that it is the same as Japanese traditional entertainment or art. Although I know some books about Kabuki that are written in English, they are boring very much. I would like to write about it in English to foreigners, so I will learn English writing more. The Unburied author : Charles Palliser It was written by the same author as 'The Quincunx'. It was also interesting very much. Although this story suggested a very bad matter, there was just an immorality matter. I think that this story wasn't long enough in order to understand all of its side stories. While I was reading this book, I didn't have time to feel the complication of the plots individually, because the next plot had come soon. L'isola del giopno prima The Island of the Day Before author : Umberto Eco I have read it in Japanese. Its translator wrote that he had been exhausted to translate it. Although it was interesting very much, I was also exhausted reading it, because it was difficult very much. Its main character is trying to cross the International Date Line in order to go to the day before. It sounds very interesting, and actually it was really interesting. I read it because Wim recommended me to read it. And Robert wrote me that he had read it already. Battlefield Earth author : L. Ron Hubbard I have known about it almost two years ago. I have a strange story until I started reading it. Anyway, I have finished it at last, and it was interesting very much. I hadn't read a big scale drama like it for a long time. Although it might be indiscreet, I like a rough fighting like sending nuclear bombs in order to destroy planet completely. I would like to say one more word, I'm not a Scientologist. (2001,8,7)
Mapplethorpe; A Biography author : Patricia Morisroe I have been loving his works very much. It was sorry very much that I can never see his new work in the future, because he had died. She was killed like a wastepaper in that movie. I had been thinking that I would like to know why she have to be killed. This book doesn't answer my question directly. L'or de Staline author : Patrick Mouton Divers have a very clear motive that they want 'money'. If someone wanted money, it would mean that his purpose demanded money. I think that money can't become a purpose. I wonder if the divers were honesty or made a misunderstanding. (2001,4,10)
Ramses der Grosse author : Philipp Vandenberg It is interesting to know about a man who lived 3000 years ago. I thank archeologists showing like that an old real story to me. Ramses had 160 children, and his world record has never been renewed. (2001,4,9)
The Secret Agent author : Joseph Conrad This book reminded me of the novel 'A spy who came from a cold country'. I'm not sure the title is right, but it was translated like that in Japanese. There is an issue that is about secret expenses of Foreign Ministry in Japan recently. This story is about a spy who spends useless secret expenses. Spy is a sad occupation, and it was so sad and so ridiculous story I think. (2001,4,6)
Candide author : Voltaire This is one of French literature. The author wrote that the idea 'everything will be going to the best result' was an outburst laughter. There is TV-show, so-called 'wide show' in Japan. I think the TV-show might say it is interesting very much to see the tragedy of others. When I was reading this book, I wanted to ask someone if I could laugh. It means a lot of tragedy is there. But the author laughed the tragedy itself and readers who laugh the tragedy of others at the same time. I think the author might have laughed me. (2001,4,5)
Three Farmers on Their Way This is the best story of this year, so far. It was really interesting. The author has a lot of useless knowledge. But it amused me very much. When I found something that I knew already in this book, I was really glad very much. I could feel the author and I might have a lot of common favorite. (2001,3,16)
Angela's Ashes author : Frank McCourt Is this true story? When I was reading it, I thought upon one of Steinbeck's works.I don't remember its original title. I had thought the most miserable was poverty class people of Japanese modern times. But the miserable of poverty is the same at every nation or area. When Frank left his family, he got his life. If Angela had divorced, she might have gotten her own life happily. Of course religion is one of the most important things of life. But I think there is no causal relationship between her miserable and her religion. Angela's miserable was her own problem. (2001, 2 , 23)
The Underground Man author : Mick Jackson This is the best story of this year, so far. I think the thinking of the Duke isnunusual.'t so While I was reading it, I could have heard his talking. He is an interesting man. But unfortunately he had no friend who thought he was interesting. I think I could have understood what he had told. I want to see him and talk with him. Les Rivieres Pourpres author : Jean-Christorhe Grange This book showed the most grotesque dead body I had ever seen. So far, this is the best mystery that I have read this year. I might have a preconception. But after I read this book, I felt French people could have felt responsible for Nazism. I watched its movie after I read this book. It was interesting very much. A Place Called Freedom author : Ken Follett The hero is always in center of troubles. Although the troubles are the problems of society, finally he has to become an outsider of the society. I want to write that the society hadn't developed enough to accept him. But I think no society would be able to accept him. The problems of society are found by person who has objective view. Always objective view belongs to people who stands outside. He is in trouble with everyone, but he is different from everyone. Because his solution is always fair. People, persons, general public, masses, democrat, they don't stand up. Thus he has to live alone as an outsider of the society. The heroine is erotic very much, and she is strong like the other heroines in the author's books. Where is my place called freedom? (2001,1, 22)
The Last Precinct author : Patricia D. Cornwell It is 11th book of the coroner series. I don't know how to spell the heroine's name. The continual murder case became bigger incident. But the coroner says that nobody knows her mind. I think nobody wants to know her mind. I thought she was in her 30s. But she was over 50 years old. I was surprised very much, because she was like a selfish child any time without reference to her ages. I don't like her. (2001,1,15)
ZERO OPTION author : Chris Ryan This book is the next
book to "STAND BY, STAND BY" that was written
by the same author. The hero, Geordy is emotional very
much the same as before. And the story doesn't finish.
The third and fourth book were published in England
already. But I have to wait until they are translated in
Japanese. It is difficult to think about terrolizm in
Japan. But today, I know Britain fights a war against IRA.
We should know that IRA isn't the same as people of
Northern Ireland. It was really interesting book, I think.
So I'm waiting for the third book with enough expectation.
The title is "Zero Option", but I think there
