決してピアノを悪く言うつもりはないが、ピアノレスのこの名演奏を聞くと、「純粋なアドリブを聞くにはピアノは邪魔だ」という説も根拠はあるのかなぁ、と感じる。実に濃密なアドリブの極致は、背筋の寒くなるほどである。結構演奏時間の長いものが多いが、ダレるどころか「誰か止めなきゃ、爆発するぜ」てなもの。凄いっ、の一言。と書いたところで先頃発売された3枚組もの増強盤を発見したので堪らず買いこんだ。2，3枚目が追加されたもので、録音データを見るとElvin Jonesが入ったオリジナル発売盤となる前に、Nick Stabulasで2枚分録音していたものを併せて発売したという事らしい。その追加分も、決して満足できずにElvin Jonesに代えた盤で発売に踏み切ったというものではないようで、緊密な連携と緊張感は勝るとも劣らない。アドリブとは何ぞや、と考え込んだらコレを聴くべきです。もう一つ、ジャズのベースは如何に動くべきなのか、と言うこともコレを聞いていると「なーるほど」と思う節がお有りの筈です。
