Earth is made up of an entangled web of both living and non-living things. In relation to others, humans have been utilizing many species carelessly, with the belief that their lives are less important than ours, and lay before us for our own use. This type of mentality has driven many species to the edge of extinction, and in other cases, over the edge. It is only recently people have realized that the disappearance of a species and the breakdown of the species web with other species, will eventually, in one way or another, affect our own lives.  Consequently, the importance of maintaining the integrity of biodiversity is now an internationally acknowledged reality.

Marine mammals, such as dolphins and whales, are also members of the earth. In Japan, they are treated as fishing resources, and are captured in large quantities commercially.  The whales and dolphins are then either slaughtered for their meat or get put away into institutions such as aquariums, or "swim with" programs, where they live out the rest of their shortened lives as the result of confinement.  Unfortunately these facts about the whales are hardly known to the general public.

Iruka & Kujira (Dolphin & Whale) Action Network works to inform the public about such current situations in Japan, and tries to establish a better relationship with all wildlife, including whales and dolphins.
