青森県出身 　１９７５年（昭和５０年）３月、国立音楽大学器楽科（ユーフォニアム専攻）卒業同年、東京芸術大学大学院音楽研究科入学。ユーフォニアムを大石清氏、指揮法をディビット・ハウエル氏に師事する。 　大学在学中より、ユーフォニアム奏者として活躍し、１９７８年、指揮者としてデビュー。以後、指揮者、作編曲家クリニッシャンとして活動している。 　吹奏楽作曲家、J.スウェアリンジェン氏、R.シェルドン氏、F.ベンクリシュートー博士（１９９７年逝去）らを数度に渡り日本へ招聘し、吹奏楽クリニック演奏会を開催。１９９４年１２月、１９９７年４月、２度にわたり、米国イリノイ州立大学教育学部音楽科にて「日本の吹奏楽教育の現状」について講演を行うなどし、国内外での管楽器教育にも熱心に取り組んでいる。 　１９９８年１１月、米国音楽教育機関紙「ＵＰ ＤＡＴＥ」で紹介され、同年開催された音楽教育カンファレンスで大きな注目を浴びた。 　　近年、創作活動も盛んに行い、吹奏楽の他にピアノ、管室内楽、合唱曲にも力を注ぎ、新作を次々と発表している。吹奏楽作品「平和への行列」は、2001年度全日本吹奏楽コンクール課題曲として採用され、２００５年、同曲が台湾でも吹奏楽コンクール課題曲として採用された。また２００７年１２月にミッドウエスト・インターナショナル・バンド・アンド・オーケストラ・クリニックで初演された「Kago-me Kago-me」が２００９年２月に開催されたテネシー州吹奏楽コンクールの課題曲としても採用された。 　２００５年３月、青森県七戸町より文化賞を授与された。

Akira Toda was born in Japan and lives in Tokyo. He graduated from Kunitachi Music College in1975 and studied in the Tokyo University of Art graduate school. He studied Euphonium with Mr. Kiyoshi Ohishi, and conducting with Mr. David Howell. He had been taking an active part as a professional Euphonium player since the school days. And, he debuted as a conductor 1978. He has acted as a conductor, a composer, a clinician and a band director since then. He held the band clinic concerts several times with Mr. James Swearingen, Mr. Robert Sheldon and Dr. Frank Bencriscutto in Japan. Music for band "Procession to peace" was adopted as competition music of All Japan Band Association in 2001, and this tune was adopted as competition music also in Taiwan in 2005. And, "Kago-me Kago-me" having given the first performance of in Chicago (USA) in 2007 was adopted as music for band competition of Tennessee (USA) in February 2009. He was given a cultural prize by Shichinohe-town (Aomori Pref.) that was his hometown on March 13 2005.
